CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Igot a text first thing that the briefing was going to be in the New Orleans Lounge, a dining area that served as a private captain’s table. When I checked in the mirror, I was still blue. I showered anyway, not hoping for much.

When I saw Turner sitting with a laptop, I ran over and gave him a hug. “Are you okay? I’m surprised Ryan let you out of Sickbay.”

Turner shrugged. “I’ve got a thick skull.”

“That’s what Ethan said!” I put a hand on his shoulder.

“Nice of him to notice.” Then Turner’s brows came together. “I think. I’ve been going over the cameras from the atrium floor. There’s no sign of Rodrigo Butler. I guess if you’re a Hollywood guy, you can avoid cameras as much as film with them.”

I saw a picture of me standing there, looking bluer than I thought I did in person. But there was also a shot of Ethan and Rowena. They were standing together. The two of them arrived at the same time. Both looked rumpled. My ire rose. “Great. Ethan has his old flame aboard, who looks like a million bucks in her power suits and heels, and I look like Homer Simpson.”

Turner eyed me. “Homer Simpson is yellow, not blue.”

I touched my chin, where I swear I could feel the blueness. “Yeah, I’m thinking of that five o’clock shadow he always has.”

“Oh. Yeah, I can see that.”

“You can?” My heart beat a little harder.

“Well, now that you say it. I thought you were worried about Sam and Cab, not Ethan and Rowena.” Turner switched images on the computer.

“You don’t think they look too chummy, at four thirty in the morning?”

“Okay, look, I’ll take care of Sam and Cab. No worries. You look after your own man. I can only be a guardian angel to so many.” Turner clicked around some more. I saw a figure in a ship’s robe moving among the few people on deck.

“Who’s that?” I asked.

“Not sure. Looks out of place. Might be the killer.”

I leaned closer, squinting at the pixels. But then Rowena called the debriefing to order. Her FBI drones sat around the table, taking up all the chairs. I had to stand. That didn’t stop me from squeezing in and grabbing a cup of coffee.

“Where are we at with locating Hinkley?” Rowena asked Steve.

“He’s still in the wind. Our theory is that he managed to get to the laundry and grab a different uniform. That’s been his MO. Up until now, we haven’t spotted him in it.” Steve fidgeted a little as he spoke.

Rowena put her fists on her hips and kept at him. “What about video footage of the murder?”

Steve studied the table. “There isn’t any.”

“There isn’t any? In the middle of the atrium, with hardly a soul around, your cameras didn’t catch the murder of our latest victim. How does that happen?” Rowena dressed Steve down. Which wasn’t fair. He wasn’t one of her men. Who had also dropped the ball.

“The cameras are what they are,” Ethan stepped in.
